General X-rays
X-rays are the fastest and simplest way to diagnose broken bones, back injuries and certain tumors. They can also be used to evaluate breathing issues like collapsed lung or pneumonia; chest X-rays are frequently performed before an operation to check on lung and heart structures; dental X-rays help detect tooth decay.
A radiographer may ask you to change into an examination gown or remove jewellery with buttons and zippers from clothing you wear before standing or lying down against an X-ray machine, depending on which part of your body needs scanning. They usually instruct their patients to hold their breath and remain still so as to not distort the image during imaging.
X-rays produce ionizing radiation that can harm living tissue at high doses, yet their diagnostic benefits far outweigh this small risk. Furthermore, the FDA and other agencies have collaborated on creating voluntary guidelines to use medical imaging that minimize exposure. According to these guidelines, imaging examinations should aim for maximum quality images at minimal radiation dose. This principle is known as As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA), while use of X-rays should only be justified when determined to do more good than harm for an individual patient.
MRI
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a diagnostic test that uses large magnets and radio waves to produce images of organs, muscles and blood vessels without using radiation. MRI can detect tumours, infections and some forms of cancer as well as soft tissue injuries or burns without harming nearby structures.
Before an MRI scan, you will be asked not to consume anything for four hours prior to entering. Any items that could interact with the magnetic field (wristwatches, keys and jewellery). A gown will be provided, though you may need to remove clothes depending on which part of your body needs scanning – underwire bras may need removing as well as buttons and belts depending on which region is being examined. A radiographer will lead you into the scanner before asking you to lie on its table – tapping or thumping noises caused by coils sending and receiving radio waves will occur during the scan – simply notify your radiographer if this bothers you so they can try and reduce it further – they might just hear tapping/thumping noises throughout; just inform them if these bothersome sounds bothering or bothering, tell your radiographer who can then try and reduce them –
Some MRI exams utilize contrast dye, either through injecting it directly into your vein before or during an exam, or via intravenous injection during. Contrast is used to help the radiologist see areas more clearly while also making conditions such as kidney disease more evident on images.
CT
A CT scan uses multiple detailed images, known as slices, of your body to form an accurate three-dimensional representation. Once stored on a computer and reviewed by radiology specialists, these results may help your physician diagnose and treat medical conditions more accurately.
As the scanner rotates around you, a narrow table equipped with straps or pillows may keep you steady. Sometimes you may be asked to hold your breath for short periods or drink liquid containing special dye (contrast). This dye allows certain parts of your body to show more clearly on imaging scans; alternatively you may also be given medication prior to testing to avoid an allergic reaction from this contrast dye.
Coastal Medical Imaging stands out as the Sunshine Coast‘s premier imaging center with its state-of-the-art technology, uncompromised professional standards, and patient centric approach to care that sets it apart from all others sites. At its center are low dose digital General X-ray, CT scanning, MRI imaging and 3D musculoskeletal ultrasound services as well as a Women’s Imaging Centre to give a full service imaging experience for you or a loved one.
Qscan Group Sunshine Coast facility features the region’s newest PET/CT scanner. Prior to its installation, Brisbane-based PET/CT services were the nearest option; patients and referring clinicians needed to travel considerable distances for treatment. Now with their new PET-CT service available closer to home, patients will enjoy more timely appointments and premium PET-CT services in their immediate region.
